The Climbing Wall Award, plus Abseil Module is for people who wish to supervise groups top roping and abseiling on indoor walls. The course is run in two parts, training (2 days) and assessment (1 day).
The process for the CWA scheme is as follows:
- Personal experience: The course assumes a basic level of climbing experience which is detailed below. If you don’t have enough personal experience you may want to consider our Outdoor Skills Course.
- Registration: Before undertaking a training course you should register on the appropriate scheme with the training board of the country in which you live:
• England (MLTE)
• Wales (MLTW)
• Scotland (MLTS)
• Northern Ireland (MLTNI) - Training course: To attend a training course, requirements include:
• Minimum 17 years of age
• At least 6 months experience of using a variety of climbing walls, including at least 15 visits to 3 different walls
• Have successfully led climbs on artificial walls. - Consolidation period: You will learn a great deal on your training course and will need some time to practice and put your new knowledge into action. Your course trainers will advise you as to how long you may want to take to do this.
- Assessment course: When you feel that you are competent in all areas of the award syllabus and meet all of the award requirements, book onto an assessment course. Requirements include:
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Have attended a training course or been granted exemption from training
• Have logged a minimum of 30 visits to at least 3 different climbing walls
• Have assisted a qualified supervisor on at least 15 instructed sessions
• Hold a valid first aid certificate
All MCC’s courses include equipment, instruction and VAT. It is important that you read the recommended clothing list.
This course will be run with a minimum of four people. Insufficient uptake may result in the cancellation of the course. Day two of the course will be run at a nearby centre, as required by the syllabus. Your instructor will brief you on day one and car sharing can be arranged.
